Ένας τρελός, τρελός κόσμος [Mad World]

   Το τραγούδι που θα αποτελέσει βάση της σημερινής μου ανάρτησης, το “Mad World” των Tears for Fears, το βρήκα τυχαία, πριν κανένα μήνα. Ήταν ένα από αυτά τα τραγούδια που σου θυμίζει κάτι, που νιώθεις ότι το έχεις ξανακούσει και που επίσης κάθε φορά που το ακούς σου αρέσει και περισσότερο. Το επιλέγω σήμερα για αρκετούς λόγους.

   Ο πρώτος είναι ότι αναφέρεται σε έναν «Τρελό Κόσμο» (Mad World). Νομίζω όλοι μπορούμε λίγο πολύ να ταυτιστούμε με αυτή την αίσθηση, της ζωής σε έναν τρελό κόσμο, με την κατάσταση που έχει διαμορφωθεί τον τελευταίο μήνα. Ολόκληρα συστήματα και οικονομίες καταρέουν,  άνθρωποι αρρωσταίνουν και πεθαίνουν, απομονώνονται και φυλακίζονται στα σπίτια τους, άλλοι παίρνουν την κατάσταση πολύ σοβαρά, σχεδόν παρανοϊκά, άλλοι τελείως αψήφιστα. Μία κατάσταση πρωτόγνωρη, αφύσικη, που δεν έχουμε ξαναζήσει και που ελπίζω και να μην ξαναζήσουμε.

   Ο δεύτερος λόγος είναι ένα δεύτερο επίπεδο επεξεργασίας που θεωρώ ότι (πρέπει να) προωθεί το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι. Το τραγούδι αυτό δεν γράφτηκε τον περασμένο μήνα. Για την ακρίβεια, γράφτηκε πριν 27 χρόνια. Συνεπώς ο «τρελός κόσμος» για τον οποίο κάνει λόγο δεν είναι αποτέλεσμα κορωναϊού. Αντικατοπτρίζει μία σκέψη-αίσθηση ότι η ανθρωπότητα έχει πάρει έναν πολύ λάθος δρόμο. Που η ανθρώπινη επαφή μειώνεται ολοένα και περισσότερο, που οι άνθρωποι είναι δέσμιοι μιας ρουτίνας, που ξεχνάνε να ζήσουν. Και εδώ προκύπτει το ερώτημα, είναι τελικά ο κορωναϊός το πρόβλημα; Μία κατάσταση που υπάρχει εδώ και λίγους μήνες και σε λίγους μήνες θα φύγει; Οι ζωές μας ήταν μια χαρά πριν και θα είναι μια χαρά και μετά; Είναι ο κορωναϊός το πρόβλημα που μας αποτρέπει από το να ζούμε τις θαυμάσιες ζωές μας ή ένα καμπανάκι, ένα ξυπνητήρι, που πρέπει να μας ωθήσει να σκεφτούμε για τον γενικότερο τρόπο ζωής μας;

   Ο τρίτος λόγος είναι η αναφορά που κάνει κάπου στη μέση για «Happy Birthday” (“Children waiting for the day they feel good, Happy birthday, happy birthday, Made to feel the way that every child should”). Είναι τα γενέθλιά μου σήμερα και το βρήκα έναν ωραίο τρόπο να το συνδυάσω, εκφράζοντας παράλληλα αισθήματα όπως η περιέργεια που νιώθω για όλη αυτή την κατάσταση. Λιγότερο ουσιαστικός από τους άλλους δύο, σίγουρα, αλλά ήταν κάτι που με εκφράζει προσωπικά οπότε θέλησα να το κάνω. Με την ελπίδα ότι του χρόνου αυτή η μέρα θα είναι καλύτερη, όχι μόνο για μένα προσωπικά, αλλά για όλη την ανθρωπότητα. Δεν ξέρω αν θα είναι, πιστεύω πάντως ότι δεν είναι ο κορωναϊός ο μεγαλύτερός εχθρός μας προς αυτήν την κατάσταση, αλλά εμείς οι ίδιοι.

English Version

   I found the song that’s gonna be the basis of my today’s post, “Mad World” by Tears for Fears, randomly, before a month or so. It was one of these songs that remind you of something, that you feel you have heard again and that, every time you hear it, you like it more and more. There are several reasons I chose it today.

   First one is that it refers to a “Mad World”. I think that all of us can, more or less, identify with that feeling, of living in a mad world, because of the situation that we are experiencing last month. Whole systems, especially health and economic systems, collapse, people get sick and die, get isolated and imprisoned in their own homes, others take things too seriously, almost in a paranoid way, others completely light-heartedly. An unprecedented, unnatural situation, that we had never experienced In the past and I hope we won’t ever re-experience in the future.

   Second reason is a second level of processing I think this song (has to) promote. This song wasn’t written in the last month. To be exact, it was written before 27 years. So, the “mad world” it speaks of, isn’t really an outcome of the coronavirus. It reflects a thought-feeling that humanity has taken a very wrong turn. Leading in the reduction of human interpersonal contact, in the captivity of humans by some routine, in them forgiving to actually live. And here the question pops, is coronavirus the big problem after all? A situation which exists for a few months and will go away after a few months as well? Were our lives all good before and are they gonna be all good after? Is the coronavirus the problem that stops us from living our great lives or some kind of alarm that should push us to re-consider our general way of living?

   Third reason is the “Happy Birthday” reference, somewhere around the middle of the song (“Children waiting for the day they feel good, Happy birthday, happy birthday, Made to feel the way that every child should”). It’s actually my birthday today and I thought it was a nice way to combine it, expressing feelings such as the curiosity I feel for all this situation at the same time. Less deep than the other two, for sure, but it was something that I felt like doing. Hoping that, next year, this day is gonna be better, not only for me, personally, but for all humanity. I don’t know if it will be, however I strongly feel our biggest enemy towards this direction isn’t coronavirus, but we ourselves.
